fin.

I’m finally done with that paper. It was a pain in the ass, but I really liked how it prompted me to talk to locals.

If you ever want to know anything about non-governmental organizations and everyday citizens’ respective abilities to advocate for themselves and their communities in China, lemme know.

dear world,

when you return from travel study on july 24th, and have until the end of August to write your paper on the research you did while in China, you should start it before August 29th.

Sincerely,

James

"Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it."

grassroots organizing + denim = a good tuesday

I had the chance to meet with one of the founders of an NGO called Grassroots Community, which basically takes a Western-NGO model approach (KINDA, but there’s some big differences) to provide services to disadvantaged communities in Shanghai and other parts of China.

It was super interesting to compare the work with orgs I’m familiar with back home. For example, a lot of the services for migrant workers (from rural areas of China to the big city) reminded me a lot of what Pilipino Worker’s Center might do for immigrants in Los Angeles. Communities in action are beautiful to me, in any country.

Also, copped new selvage jawnz at Uniqlo since my time’s almost up here it was just about time for a new pair. Free hemming was a bonus. Can’t wait for some sick fadez bro!
